As everyone knows, Gran Canaria is a highly appreciated holiday destination thanks to the fact that is has the most agreeable temperatures in Europe, especially during the coldest months of the year.
It is also known for being the "Caribbean of Europe", having a climate and lifestyle similar to those found in that part of the world. This island is especially attractive to Europeans who, being avid fans of the sun and heat, are only a few hours by plane from delightful beaches and a mild climate that lasts the whole year round, and all at a very competitive price.

Christopher Columbus passed through the Canary Islands on his way to America. The first settlers were the Guanches who lived in caves, and some research suggests that they were of Berber origin, from the north of Africa. In the east of Gran Canaria is the "Barranco de Guayadeque", also called the "Valley of Caves", and which is of great cultural importance owing to the archaeological remains found there. Here they still build dwellings in accordance with ancient customs and a church and restaurant have been built in caves.

With time, the largest islands, such as Gran Canaria and Tenerife, have become major commercial and maritime transport centres. In 1478 the Spanish founded the capital, Las Palmas, in the north of the island.

Gran Canaria has lots to offer. If you feel like taking relaxing holidays, there is almost always good weather and lovely beaches, wonderful seafront promenades and excellent restaurants. If you prefer golf, there are eight courses within a radius of 50km. On the island there are numerous routes for walking. The north is characterised by its high mountains and deep valleys, banana plantations and almost tropical vegetation. The capital is nowadays a modern city where the former colonial style merges with picturesque and cultural surroundings. There are shopping centres offering all the major brand names and a large number of restaurants serving international cuisine. The old quarter is known as "La Vegueta" and dates back to the XV century.

The south of the island harbours the most important beaches (to the south of the airport): San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas and Las Meloneras – to name but a few - where a stylish tourist complex has recently been constructed. Here not only can you find sun and sea, but also one of the best spas in Europe. The first tourists who visited Gran Canaria on organised trips did so for health reasons. Still today, this island maintains its reputation as an ideal spot for health and relaxation and, over time, excellent facilities have been constructed to care for your body and wellbeing. In Las Meloneras you can find exclusive hotels, fine restaurants and a large, recently-opened casino. Golfers have available a golf course only a short distance away.
